Construction Progress: Civil Works & Electromechanical Works
RPCL delegated and authorized NELSAP-CU, an investment arm of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) to implement the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project (RRFHP). Considering that the Project is complex and transboundary in nature, a Project Implementation Support Agreement (PISA) was signed between the project owner, RPCL, and the implementation agency, NELSAP-CU, establishing the relationship between the Implementing Agency and the Owner.
NELSAP-CU, as mandated by the three countries through RPCL, is responsible for the overall implementation of the RRFHP during the preparation and construction phase through a Rusumo Project Implementation Unit (PIU).
Civil Works & Electromechanical Works
The overall construction progress of the RRFHP is now approaching 72% as of November 2020 combined Civil and Electromechanical Works.
The Civil Contractor continues working inside the cofferdam area and concrete placement for the dam structure, in the headrace tunnel this month, the administration building works.
The Electromechanical Contractor is working in the powerhouse with the assembly of water passage steel in Units 1 and 2. Gantry tower and beam erection continue at the switchyard.
Headrace Tunnel (HRT) excavation: about 113 meters of top header, 254 meters of benching and concrete lining installation at the HRT. The Inlet Chamber awaits installation of gate guides. Penstock steel assembly ie. welding of cans for units 1 and 3 continues, whereas unit 2 installation will commence after the tower crane is repositioned on site.
Service bay wall construction continues, while the upstream portion of the superstructure continued is now being erected at unit 3.
Concrete work within the powerhouse continues with concrete being placed with the downstream wall of unit 3. The final slab of concrete was placed within the control room floor level, upstream of unit 2.
Service bay crane assembly awaits to be done by both Civil and Electromechanical Contractors.
