Biodiversity Monitoring
Construction of RPCL 80 MW Power Plant has environmental impacts on the aquatic ecosystem of the Akagera River and impacts on terrestrial ecosystems. This needs to be monitored during construction on a regular basis and a bit after the construction.
Construction works are undertaken upstream of protected areas and have numerous wetlands which are protected in Rwanda. Riverbanks are also protected in Tanzania.
The Akagera River is therefore considered as the habitat of endangered, critically endangered, vulnerable species, which makes the river a critical habitat.
Constructions works undertaken by NELSAP PIU on behalf of RPCL use Environmental Safeguards Management Plans guided by and to comply to the World Bank Safeguards Policies (OP 4.04 and OP 4.01) to implement the biodiversity monitoring.
