RRFHP Handover between NELSAP and RPCL

Introduction: In a significant step forward for regional cooperation and sustainable development, the Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program Coordination Unit (NELSAP CU) has officially handed over the implementation of the remaining activities of the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project (RRFHP) to the Rusumo Power Company Limited (RPCL), the owner of the RRFHP. The transition from the construction phase to the operational phase marks a pivotal moment in the project's journey towards enhancing energy access and fostering economic growth in the East African region.
Progress: The handover ceremony, which took place on Saturday 13th April 2024 witnessed key stakeholders from NELSAP and RPCL coming together to commemorate the successful completion of the construction phase and the commencement of operations at the RRFHP by RPCL. The event was characterized by a sense of accomplishment and achievement as both parties reiterated their commitment to the project's objectives and the benefits it promises to deliver to the Shareholding Countries namely Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania
During the ceremony, representatives from NELSAP reflected on the collaborative efforts that have brought the project to fruition, emphasizing the significance of regional cooperation in addressing energy challenges and promoting sustainable development.
They expressed confidence in RPCL's capacity to effectively manage and operate the 80MW Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Plant, ensuring its optimal performance and contribution to the region's energy security.
RPCL expressed its appreciation for NELSAP’s dedication during the project implementation phase of the RRFHP. Additionally, RPCL reaffirmed its commitment to continued cooperation and possible collaboration in future projects. RPCL outlined its strategic vision for the operational phase, highlighting its commitment to maximizing the project's socio-economic benefits while adhering to the highest standards of safety, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency.
The handover ceremony also provided an opportunity for both parties to acknowledge the invaluable support received from various stakeholders, including the Governments of Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania, as well as development partners and financial institutions namely the World Bank and the African Development Bank. Their collective contribution has been instrumental in overcoming challenges and ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
