RPCL Board Chair ushers Rusumo Project completion phase
On 25th February 2023, the Chairman of RPCL Board of Directors and also Commissioner of Electricity in the Tanzania Ministry of Energy, Eng. Innocent Luoga and Tanzania Member of RPCL Board, Mr Nuru Ndile, visited Rusumo Project to closely follow up the concluding phase of the Project construction.
The overall construction works of the 80MW Power Plant is at 98.5 %, civil works are at 99.2% and the electro-mechanical works at 97% as of January 2023, affirmed Eng. Kirenga Emmanuel, the Civil Engineer of the Project Implementation Unit of NELSAP, implementing construction on behalf of Rusumo Power Company Limited (RPCL) for the Governments of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania. Eng. Kirenga explained that all efforts are put together to complete the Project as soon as possible.

The Chairman of RPCL Board of Directors explained that his visit to the construction site is meant to support speeding up the completion of the construction works. He strongly advised the civil contractor to avail additional manpower and assign them to critical areas and reinforce the pace of works.
Eng. Luoga appreciated the progress of works at site; he also recommended the two contractors to strengthen the interface works for both contractors. He added, “more effort should concentrate on the coordination of completion activities so to start the wet test in mid-March 2023”.
The visiting team also visited Rusumo Village Water Projects and Rusumo Health Center of the Local Area Development Program (LADP) phase 1 in Tanzania, among others. The LADP Ngara Ag. Coordinator gave a brief status on the projects implementation and informed the RPCL Board that the contractor for electrification for both projects are on board. The Board Chairman urged the LADP Coordination Unit to complete both projects and they should be fully operational before end of March 2023.
In his closing remarks, the Board Chairman called all parties involved in the Rusumo Project implementation to cooperate more so as to complete the infrastructure and social projects as soon as possible.
“Citizens of our three Countries need to enjoy from this long-waited power from the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project”, he underscored.
