Eng. Mugo is an experienced professional engineer, project manager and certified professional mediator with more than 40 years experience in the energy sector of which at least 25 years were in senior management and leadership level in planning and development of the entire value chain of electricity supply.
He is currently serving in the Boards of Africa50, Stima Savings and Credit Society and Rusumo Falls Power Company. He also works as an Independent Energy and Management consultant and is Senior Adviser in Virunga Power.
Engineer Mugo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from University of Nairobi, Masters in Business Administration from the same university, Advanced Management Program certificate from Strathmore University (Kenya) and IESE University (Spain). Eng Mugo is also a Member of Institute of Directors (Kenya).
Before retirement in 2017, Eng Mugo served as Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) for 4 years. Previously he was for five years the Business Development and Strategy in KenGen. In that position, he led KenGen in developing Wind, Thermal and Geothermal generating projects in Kenya.
Eng Mugo also worked in the Kenya Power and Lighting Company as the Power System Development Manager. In that position, he led the planning of the power system in Kenya, electricity tariff setting, negotiating power purchase agreements as well as interacting with Development Financial Institutions involved in power sector development.
Eng Mugo was a member of the Nile Basin Initiative power trade team from 1999 to 2006 in which time he was involved in the studies of a number of power generation and transmission projects in the Nile Basin.
Eng Mugo has extensive experience in power system operation and also project and investment planning in the Eastern African region.
